Many first-time visitors come to Niseko, Hokkaido, ready to learn skiing or snowboarding but are unsure where to start, what to practise, or how to plan their lessons.
Niseko offers wide slopes, excellent snow and soft powder, making it a great place for complete beginners. However, powder feels very different from a groomed run. Without the right guidance, beginners may fall often, progress slowly and lose confidence.
The Best Learning Order for Beginners
Step 1: Build a Stable Stance and Good Balance
Speed is not the goal on your first day. Focus on getting comfortable with your skis or snowboard, finding your balance and keeping your weight centred. Your instructor will also help correct common habits such as hunching, leaning back and keeping your body too stiff.
Step 2: Learn Speed Control and Safe Stopping
Being able to control your speed and stop safely is the real foundation of skiing and snowboarding. Advanced turns, powder riding and edge changes all depend on reliable stopping skills.

Step 3: Practise on Gentle Slopes and Build Confidence
Practise repeatedly on an open beginner slope with fewer people. This helps your body become comfortable with the rhythm of riding, reduces nervousness and builds confidence.
Step 4: Practise Basic Edge Changes and Progress Further
Once your basic movements are stable, gradually practise edge changes and direction control to make your riding smoother and more consistent.

The Ideal Lesson Schedule for Beginners
We recommend 3–5 consecutive days of structured lessons. This is usually much more effective than taking separate one-off lessons. Consistent practice in Niseko helps your body build muscle memory faster and improves learning efficiency.
At RAKU SNOW, we offer structured beginner lessons with Chinese-speaking instruction. Our instructors break each movement into clear steps and adjust the pace to each guest, helping first-timers learn safely, comfortably and with confidence while enjoying Niseko’s famous powder snow.
